The Hound of the Baskervilles; Illustrated by Matthew Stewart
Norwalk, CT: Easton Press, 2013. Signed Limited Edition # 758 / 1200. Olive green leather with five raised bands. Titling on spine in black panels and gilt rule and flourish on spine panels. Cover has titling in gilt with black and gilt border. Marbled, feathered beige endpapers, satin ribbon bookmark still tucked in. 9.25" x 11.25", 246 pp. Signed by illustrator on colophon page in blue ink. Ten color plates and a double fold-out frontispiece, taken from oil paintings, tipped on to heavier weight pages, each having a protective transluscent tissue protector. Additionally, there are headpiece vignettes at every chapter. Matthew Stewart created the original artwork for these plates using oil on board and oils on paper mounted to board. Because Stewart is traditionally known for his intricate work in heroic fantasy (including extensive illustrations for Magic: The Gathering), his choice of oil paints allowed him to capture the heavy texture, dense fog, and glowing, supernatural menace of the Devonshire moors. Fine, near as new, purchased by previous owner for shelf value, not to be read. All edges gilt. / Green cloth slipcase with black textured interior. Glossy illustration on the front matches the frontispiece, bordered by gilt and black rule and flourish. Fine slipcase, nary a blemish. Item #3437
