Papal Bull with Lead Seal and Chord; Grant of Ecclesiastical Benefice
Rome: The Vatican, April 3, 1654. The lead seal has "Pape Innocentus X" on the reverse and as is traditional, the profiles of Sts. Peter and Paul, unevenly worn in favor of Paul, on the obverse. It is still tied to the document through two holes and connected with a long red and gold twined rope, now frayed at the end. This leaden seal was called a "bulla", hence the name "Papal Bull" This Grant of an Ecclesiastical Benefice, while not a matter of faith or dogma, is none the less a Papal Bull, a directive from the Pope, in this case Innocent X (1574 – 1655). Born Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 15 September 1644 to his death, in January 1655. The signature block carries two Papal Crosses, an infinity symbol with two horizontal lines above it. This represents the authority of the papacy and the everlasting nature of the Catholic Church. The document is given at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the third day (tertio) (Kalendas) of April, 1654.

"An apostolic grant (beneficium ecclesiasticum, praebenda) due to a canon at Modena and its redditus had ceased by means of the voluntarily vacancy of a former administering priest, per liberam resignationis. Thus, the Pope granted (praebenda) a priest of Modena the right to administering an ecclesiastical benefice (beneficium ecclesiasticum), a canon (periodical payment) a redditus (a tax) and its attached benefits... Canon and redditus are reducted from the annual amount of the fruits, revenues and incomes rise to 24 ducats fructus redditus et proventas veintiquator ducatos auri de. The specific land was located nearby the city of Modena (northern Italy) prebenda ecclesia mutinensis."
