Logbook of The General Trading Schooner Corymbus

The North Sea: 1866-1871. Contemporary spine binding in light half cloth, blue cardboard plates with applied descriptive label. In-Folio format board book (11.25" x 9.75"). pp. 246. Compiled by George Webster, official "No. of Certificate 68:453" in clear and legible cursive writing in dark ink and pencil. Cover label filled in with the name of the schooner "Corymbus", its commander, the Scottish shipowner from Glasgow and the period in which the newspaper was compiled, between 5 February 1866 and 28 October 1871. The schooner, commanded by Captain William Willis, plied between London, various ports in England and Scotland, Dublin, Rotterdam, Boulogne and other continental ports. The meteorological information is precise and detailed, with the description of some strong storms encountered in the first days of November 1869 on the return route from Boulogne to London. The list of crew members is also scrupulous with the description of their ordinary and extraordinary tasks: washing clothes, cleaning the deck of the ship, mending and tidying the sails, taking care of the masts, restoring damaged parts of the ship, cooking for the sailors, officers and the commander. On 29 March 1867 the ship arrived in Kirkaldy where it stopped for two days and on 30 March 1867 it took on 20 tons of fertilizer between 6.30 pm and 10 pm when, given the favorable climatic conditions, it left the port to anchor in the bay. .Precious and of particular interest are the 4 final pages in which a large number of barometric observations are reported, with the measurement of the ascending and descending pressure, inserted in large tables which indicate the place where the ship was located with its coordinates, sea conditions and pressure variations found over the course of a few days, weeks and months. A small oil drip at the top of the first 6 pages, otherwise an example in very good condition. Item #3288
