Red cloth over boards with titling in gilt on the spines and the cover, with gilt rules. 6" x 9", V. 1:xvii, 1 - 646 [1], followed by folded map tipped into rear endpaper, map is in fine condition. Other volumes with similar pagination. Red top edge, all volumes are clean and tight, apparently unread. Only the slightest shade of spine fade against bright red covers. Portrait frontispieces of Lee at different stages of his military career. All illustrations, portraits, plates, maps, facsimiles in place. This was the first of Freeman's Pulitzer Prize for Biography [1935] and he won again, posthumously, in 1958 for his biography of George Washington.
