Peking, China: Poplar-Island Press, 1938. Limited Edition #75 / 150. Dark blue folding slip case with two bone closure pins. Cardboard graphic cover. 18.75" x 12.25, 28 unnumbered pp. Housed in an attractive folding slip case, this folio includes six (6) full 2-page reproductions and one 1-page reproduction. The paintings are monochrome on beige background with a brown patterned border. Slipcase is in VG condition, ding on one corner, has some incidental spotting on the inside. The book itself is also in VG condition, with roll to top edge and light bow to front edge of the cover. Text block is in Fine condition, wrinkled tissue guards are in place for all reproductions.

The printing of the set was done by the Poplar-Island Press which was founded in 1937 outside the gates of Peking, hence, this was one of the early pieces produced by the press. The press was owned by Vincenz Maria Hundhause, a German who was a German language professor working at Peking University. The press was initially founded as a venue for publishing Hundhausen's own poetic works but eventually grew to become a large private publishing business in prewar China. Hundhause remained in China throughout World War II despite loosing his position due to Nazi influences in the administration. China ultimately expelled him in 1954. (Geographicus). Item #2957
