Original Voting Poll From the Contested Presedential Election of 2000; With Controversial Butterfly Ballot

Palm Beach County, FL: 2000. 16” x 13” plastic platform with 5.5” x 7.5”,2 pp. ballot. Includes 10 Ballots and the chad stylus. Printed on the "Butterfly Ballot' are the names of the ten Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates with Bush / Chaney at the top followed by Gore / Lieberman as well as other candidates: Ralph Nader (Green Party), Pat Buchanan (Reform), Monica Moorehead (Workers World) and others.

The confusing design of this ballot layout resulted in as many as 19,000 errant votes. According to a 2001 study in the American Political Science Review, the voting errors caused by the butterfly ballot cost Gore the election: "Had PBC used a ballot format in the presidential race that did not lead to systematic biased voting errors, our findings suggest that, other things equal, Al Gore would have won a majority of the officially certified votes in Florida." All fine and unique. Item #1213

“One thing, however, is certain. Although we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year's Presidential election, the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the Nation's confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law.” Justice Stevens.
